OPEN METERING SYSTEM

The OMS-Group

Who we are

The OMS-Group e. V. is a community of interest of associations, presently figawa and KNX, and enterprises in the area of metering relevant to billing. With the Open Metering System Specification the OMS-Group has developed an open, vendor independent standard for communication interfaces and basic requirements.

WHAT IS THE OMS?

The measuring system for the energy transition

OMS is the only open and standardized energy metering system that integrates the consumption values of all energy sectors into one system: Electricity, gas, thermal energy, water – in metering as well as submetering. In addition, OMS is compatible with the international communication standard for building technology KNX. This enables direct integration of building automation, energy management and smart home systems. Communication is based on the proven M-Bus standard.

The OMS specification is open and can be realized patent-free

The OMS specification describes the communication path between an OMS device, e.g. a measuring device, and an installed communication device (gateway) in both directions. The OMS specification is publicly available and can be implemented patent-free by all interested parties.

WHY OMS?

The advantages of OMS

Metering point operators, such as municipal utilities, are investing in an interoperable meter fleet for the future with OMS meters. OMS meters are an essential part of the energy landscape of the future.

1.

OMS is a future-proof communication standard as it is based on European standards and is supported by the industry

2.

Free choice of supplier: OMS meters from different manufacturers can be easily combined

3.

Counting different media or a medium of different characteristics, such as gas of different quality (natural gas, biogas).

4.

The meter fleet will be fully compatible and interoperable

5.

Planning security: the investment in the meter fleet retains its value in the long term

6.

Positioning as an expert for cross-manufacturer meter communication.

7.

Direct communication with the meters designed for this purpose is possible: reading consumption, controlling meters, locating defective meters or leaks, switching off meters, etc.

8.

OMS meters enable the introduction of smart grids to reduce energy consumption and improve the integration of renewable energies

9.

ISO/IEC 14543-3 = EN 50090 (KNX) has been integrated into the OMS application profile for data visualization (consumption display) and the connection of building automation (smart home) at the consumer. KNX installations can thus gain added value from OMS meters without great effort, as they use the S-mode according to EN13757-4 for wireless communication just like the OMS meters.

The OMS-Label

The only open standard for measuring consumption in all energy sectors

Smart metering products are awarded the OMS label if it has been proven that they meet the requirements of the OMS specification. The certification body is DVGW CERT, the largest European certifier in the gas and water sector.

Consumers, utility companies, the housing sector, industry and users of home and building automation recognize from the OMS label that these smart meter devices work together with devices from other manufacturers and for other energy-saving applications. They meet strict data protection requirements and are highly future-proof.

Board & Working Groups

Communicate consumption safely and interoperably with M-Bus

The working groups have set themselves the goal of initiating innovations in the further development of the OMS specification, defining the basic requirements for devices and promoting harmonization. In this way, the working groups contribute to greater competitiveness of the “OMS-Group e. V.” members and the users of the OMS standard.

CERTIFICATION

OMS certification – safety for manufacturers and users

Certificates have become an integral part of today’s business world. They offer all market participants the certainty that required and promised standards and norms are complied with. In the case of the “Open Metering System (OMS)” standard, the certificate and the associated brand guarantee the compatibility of OMS-capable products and devices – if it says OMS on it, it contains OMS. The available certification process is carried out together with DVGW CERT or VDE PZI.

The Standard for Remote Reading of Smart Meters

The Open Metering System is based on M-Bus. It is the only system definition across Europe which integrates all media (electricity, gas, heat and water incl. submetering) into one system. The OMS-Group e. V. is a nonprofit organization and interest group of meter manufacturers, utilities, meter operators, electronics manufacturers, communication firms, and IT companies.
