We wish you a healthy, happy and successful year 2018 and hope to meet you soon at the E-world energy & water in Essen, where OMS-Group Spokesman Andreas Bolder will give a presentation on the Open Metering System.
Among the other news in this first OMS-Group newsletter of 2018 is a summary of the Executive Board’s discussions at the board meeting in January, which focused on the results our member survey.

OMS at the E-world energy & water 2018
At the E-world energy & water (February 6–8, 2018), OMS-Group Spokesman Andreas Bolder will give a conference talk on “OMS: Metering and Submetering in regulated and deregulated markets“.
The presentation will be held on Tuesday, February 6, from 10:00 Uhr to 11:00 a.m. in the Smart Tech Forum of the E-world congress.
The Smart Tech Forum focuses on smart solutions and technical questions related to IT security, digital platforms and intelligent networks. The focus of the E-world 2018 is innovative solutions for the energy supply
of the future – from generation, to distribution and storage, to retail, efficiency and green technologies. The trade fair is growing constantly in the area of storage, decentralized facilities and energy services.
Numerous exhibitors will present themselves at Germany’s largest Smart Energy trade fair with its focus on renewable energy and intelligent technologies.
The OMS-Group team is looking forward to meeting you in Essen! 13 members of the OMS-Group are setting up their own booths at the E-world 2018.
OMS at the Light+Building:Interoperability, the Key to Smart Grids
Secure meter communication with M-Bus is one of the topics of the “Marketplace Open Building Automation“ at the Light+Building 2018 in Frankfurt/Main (March 18–23). The OMS-Group will be presenting wired and wireless
M-Bus smart meter solutions at booth E66 in Hall 9.1. Jörg Fischer of Relay and Herman Lertes of Ingenieurbüro H. Lertes will present how M-Bus enables interoperability, the key to independence for utilities.
OMS-Group Certified Products Listing
The list of certified OMS devices is growing. By the end of January, 12 smart meters were listed in the OMS website:
products by Diehl Metering GmbH, Kamstrup A/S, Landis+Gyr GmbH, QUNDIS GmbH,
Sensus GmbH Ludwigshafen, and Techem Energy Services GmbH. The list includes six OMS Generation 4 meters. Two more OMS Generation 4 meters have already passed testing at the DVGW Cert laboratory and will soon also be
listed on the website – products by ITRON and by Diehl Metering.
OMS Test Tool + Radio Transceiver Now Available as Package
The OMS test tool will soon be available in combination with an 868 MHz wireless M-Bus transceiver with USB interface. The USB transceiver (size: approx. 78 x 28 x 15 mm) by OMS-Group member Michael Rac GmbH is
calibratable and can be used for mobile reading and for meter testing. Its power supply and the data communication are realized using the USB interface.
The OMS Test Tool + Radio Transceiver Package costs EUR 3,500 for OMS-Group members, EUR 9,000 € for non-members.
OMS-Group Board Meeting in January 2018
The Executive Board of the OMS-Group wishes all members and all readers of our newsletter a successful year 2018!
Last year the OMS-Group took another big step forward to achieve our goal of defining an interoperable communication standard for metering systems for all energy types. We would like to thank the members of the OMS working
groups, who have made a major contribution to these accomplishments. We would like to express our special thanks to Uwe Pahl, whose commitment as convener of the WG 1 “Primary Communications“ played a major role
in shaping the OMS specification from the very beginning. At the OMS-Group General Assembly in November 2017, Mr. Pahl announced that he wants to step down as convener of the WG 1, but will continue to participate
in the working group. Now the WG 1 has the task of choosing a new convener.
The Executive Board of the OMS-Group met for its scheduled meeting in Cologne on January 23, 2018. The main focus of the discussion was the evaluation of the member survey of the OMS-Group. The response rate of the
survey was 30%. That is less than we hoped for, as we want to adjust the tasks that lie ahead of us according to the wishes of the OMS-Group members.
The survey had asked members to evaluate their satisfaction with the OMS-Group on a 6-point grading scale from 1 (excellent) to 6 (insufficient). The average value of the respondents was 2.6. 81% of the respondents stated
that they would recommend the OMS-Group to others. The main reasons to join OMS-Group are the work on standardization and interoperability and the possibility to participate in the development of the specification.
Participants of the survey expect the OMS-Group to ensure interoperability by providing a proper, transparent and comprehensive certification program. And they expect the OMS-Group to become more international. 87.5% of the
respondents focus on IoT and 94% want the OMS-Group to work on IoT. Respondents also stated that information on the OMS standard should be spread more widely outside of Germany, especially in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and
Africa. Marketing actions are important to achieve this goal. 81% of the survey respondents agree that the written communication of the OMS-Group should be in English only.
The Executive Board of the OMS-Group will address these topics and dedicate one full day to the discussion of the strategic objectives at the next board meeting.
