3rd Gateway Certification of BSI: Rollout About to Begin

The BSI (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik) certified, in December 2019, is the third Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW) and considers the requirements for a broad rollout of intelligent metering systems to be fulfilled in Germany. A functioning infrastructure must be available for secure operation. This includes services for secure IT operation (smart meter gateway administration), a trustworthy communication infrastructure (smart metering public key infrastructure) and the possibility to integrate the intelligent metering systems into the market communication. For this purpose, OMS offers interoperable metering for connection to the BSI certified SMGW

OMS Member News: Sustainability Demands Compatible Solutions

With CEO Volker Eck, QUNDIS GmbH is providing a board member to Open Metering System association since the end of 2018: “All energy sectors have to provide compatible solutions. We have a common goal. It is for this reason that we took care to ensure that QUNDIS products such as heat cost allocator Q caloric 5.5, electronic water meters Q water 5.5 and the gateways ‘Q gateway 5’ and ‘5.5 direct’ generally feature OMS specification.” In regard to data protection, the company is proudly taking a leading role in directing the industry towards interoperability of meters for different consumption media.

M-Bus Website Relaunch by OMS-Group

The previous M-Bus website (www.m-bus.com) dated back to the 90s – on behalf of the OMS-Group it has now been redesigned by MarDirect and now clearly documents the development of the M-Bus specification through the 90s and also provides a connection to the Open Metering System. A content update will follow shortly. M-Bus (Meter-Bus) is a European standard (EN 13757-2 physical and link layer, EN 13757-3 application layer) for the remote reading of water meter, gas or electricity meters.

OMS LinkedIn Community is Growing

Frequent news about the Open Metering System and the OMS-Group on the social media platform LinkedIn is becoming increasingly popular due to recent numerous trade fair participations. The OMS LinkedIn community already has more than 525 contacts after about a year. Within the scope of the contributions there is the possibility for commenting and exchanging information with many experts from the metering industry.

From the OMS Executive Board

On January 29, 2020 the OMS-board held its first meeting this year which was also the first meeting after last year's General Meeting. The meeting took place in the premises of BDEW (Bundesverband der Energie- und Wasserwirtschaft – the German Association of Energy and Water Industries) in Berlin. This was entirely a coincidence with the events around the announcement of the so-called "market declaration regarding the roll-out" following the update of the BSI's market analysis at the end of that week.

Germany will see quite a number of "intelligent metering systems" being installed this year. There will be additional benefits if a utility's non-electricity meters in a property are also connected to the Smart Meter Gateway (SMGW) of the intelligent metering system. Easy installation and reliable operation of these meters are the key points to success. The OMS-Group offers a variety of certified meters for gas, water or thermal energy to be connected via radio to the Local Metrological Network (LMN) of the SMGW. An extensive list can be found on our website.

In 2020 the Board will continue solving the open issues addressed at the 2019's General Meeting which have already been identified in our last newsletter. Additionally we will set our focus on submetering. Due to the amended EED (Energy Efficiency Directive), remote reading of submetering devices will become mandatory in a fairly short time. Devices "speaking OMS" are a future-proof option when it comes to reliability, interoperability and data security. The OMS-Group will actively participate in the different panels dealing with Smart/Sub-Metering being established as announced by the German Ministry of Economics in December 2019.
