Dear Readers,

The OMS-Group has started 2021 by introducing a new format with the first OMS Webinar which will take place on February 24th. In this webinar, a number of metering experts will discuss the interaction of OMS-certified products and smart meter gateways in detail. Further information including registration can be found in the first article. With a new OMS member, which is introduced in this newsletter, the OMS-Group has expanded to 66 companies from 17 countries worldwide. All this demonstrates the increasing relevance of the OMS-Group in the interoperable smart meter world. We look forward to seeing you all at the OMS Webinar.

First, we invite you to read the latest newsletter. We hope you enjoy it. Feel free to send us any comments and suggestions.

Best regards,
Charles van Dyck
Head of the OMS Working Group Marketing

Free OMS Webinar "OMS-Certified Products in LMN Interaction with Smart Meter Gateways"

How do OMS-certified consumption meters communicate optimally with smart meter gateways? The OMS-Group will present the status quo in a free webinar that will be streamed live on February 24th from 1.30 – 3.00 pm (CET). Experts from the metering industry will provide insights into device certification and the application of the open OMS standard. The webinar will be held in German.

Following the introduction by Andreas Bolder (METRONA Union), Spokesperson of the OMS-Group’s Executive Board, Jörg Feuchtmeier (Diehl Metering), Head of OMS Working Group 3 "Testing Norm", will explain the OMS roadmap. Thomas Joachim (German Federal Office for Information Security, BSI) will then look at "OMS Standards in iMSys from the BSI's Point of View". This will be followed by Uwe Uphoff (Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus) with his presentation "From Metered Value with OMS Protocol to Billing", René Giebel (EMH metering) on "TAF Versus OMS – Mapping the Current Situation", Janosch Wagner (Power Plus Communications) with the "OMS Solution TAF-7, TR-07" and Ruwen Konzelmann (Theben) on "Multi-Divisional Metering with OMS-Certified Meters". Wolfgang Esch, (WEPTECH elektronik) a member of the OMS-Group’s Executive Board will conclude proceedings with an "Overview and Outlook on OMS-Certified Meters".

OMS Website: Nearly 20,000 Visits from 147 Countries

7.3% more visits in 2020 compared to the previous year – the website of the OMS-Group is gaining in popularity. There were nearly 20,000 visits from 147 countries worldwide, which are shown in colour in the adjacent image. Only on the OMS website can you find all information about the OMS-Group member companies, the interoperable OMS standard and its specifications and technical reports, the OMS Conformance Test Tool for device testing, all OMS-certified products – newly certified in January: the T450 from Landis+Gyr, a static ultrasonic heat meter/cooling meter – and much more useful information including events like the upcoming OMS Webinar.
OMS TR-07 "Meter Reading Transmission via M-Bus Compact Profile" Released

Version 1.0.1 of the OMS Technical Report 07 was released on the OMS-Group's website in January 2021. It was prepared by a subgroup of the OMS Working Group 1 (OMS AG1) “Primary communications”. The document was primarily created to technically describe how the tariff-use-case “meter reading profile” (TAF7) can be completed, for meters communicating via radio in the Local Metrological Network (LMN) of a Smart Meter Gateway (SMG), in line with the technical guideline BSI TR-03109-1.

The stipulations made in this Technical Report for the M-Bus compact profile are not limited to TAF7 in the SMG. They may also be implemented for other applications in which measuring devices are to transmit current measuring values by radio with sufficient rate to maintain short registration periods. The document was submitted to the relevant authorities of German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and the National Metrology Institute of Germany (PTB) for comment before technical release. TR-07 will also be a topic at the OMS Webinar on February 24th.
News from the OMS Group’s Executive Board

We ended last year with our General Meeting (see news4all 4/2020) and we have started this year with our first board meeting that took place on 2nd of February. Once again, it was a virtual meeting.

With all the board members and the people from the OMS office attending, the organizational matters related to this year’s work could be easily assigned. As already announced in our last report, further liaisons of the OMS-Group, with other associations active in the field of battery-powered radio communication, are currently under consideration.

We are happy to announce that a collaboration between the OMS-Group and the LoRa Alliance was signed last week by Debbie McGinnis, Executive Director of the LoRa Alliance and Andreas Bolder, Spokesperson of the OMS-Group’s Executive Board. A further collaboration, with the Mioty Alliance, is also under negotiation.

Both collaborations are seen as win-win-situations for the parties involved. The OMS-Group is equipped with a precisely defined application stack for metering as part of the OMS Specification. It is not limited to the M-Bus application, but also includes the OBIS-Code List that connects the M-Bus metering application to the world of DLMS metering. Metering is seen as one of the essential use cases when implementing IoT networks. Regardless of the technology chosen for the transmission of metering data, in the future network operators will be certain that their metering data speaks “OMS” and can be easily transferred into their backend systems.

The additional benefit is that the “Open” in Open Metering System will have an additional meaning.
