Dear Readers,

It was great to meet many of our OMS-Group members at our recent General Meeting in Frankfurt/M. 2018 was a successful year for the OMS-Group. We presented OMS based interoperability in metering at a growing number of events. The highlight this year was our showcase of 43 OMS devices at the European Utility Week in Vienna. Furthermore we promoted OMS at the Light + Building in Frankfurt and at metering days in Fulda. The coming year will be even more exciting due to the expected rollout of smart meters in Germany. We look forward to accompanying and supporting you with the interoperable OMS standard.

We wish you a wonderful and peaceful holiday season!

Best regards,
Charles van Dyck
Head of the OMS Working Group Marketing

Fluvius Announces Rollout of 4.6 Million OMS-based Meters

In Flanders (Belgium), the mass rollout of 4.6 million OMS-based smart meters for gas and electricity is underway. Fluvius will start this rollout in 2019. In an interview, Davy Michiels, Smart Meter Project Manager at Fluvius, speaks about the details: "We will start deploying 4.6 million electricity and gas meters over a period of 15 years. (...) The OMS/M-Bus is the leading standard on the European continent for the gas meter industry. (…) Interoperability is a very important aspect because as a utility company, we run multiple types of energy. When you install smart meters, they need to work together. That's why we make the clear choice for open standards like OMS instead of vendor-proprietary implementations."

OMS Test Tool Available for Network Operators and Utilities

Network operators and utilities will roll out thousands of smart meters and gateways in 2019 – according to the market declaration of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The OMS Conformance Test Tool offers the fastest and easiest option to verify the OMS or M-Bus compatibility of these devices. Therefore the OMS-Group expects a growing demand from the utilities’ departments who are responsible for the validation of metering devices.

Wired M-Bus AG 4 Prepares New Release of OMS TR02

The OMS working group "Wired M-Bus" (AG 4) was restarted in May 2018. After the break it worked on clarifications and adoptions to new revisions of EN13757 and OMSS Vol. 2.

The head of the working group, Andreas Papenheim (Relay), shapes the future plans: "In 2019 the focus will be on updating the OMS-TR02 to V 2.0.x. For this purpose we will send out the new draft release of OMS-TR02 to the OMS-Group members for review. Their comments will be included in the new version, which we expect to be available in the 3rd quarter of the year 2019. Afterwards the content of OMS-TR02 shall be transferred to OMSS Vol. 2 between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020."

EUW 2018: Wake-up Call to the Energy and Housing Industries

20 manufacturers, 43 OMS products, 200 expert discussions: At the European Utility Week from 6 to 8 November in Vienna, the OMS Group achieved its exhibition goal. It was the largest product show for interoperable metering and submetering since its foundation. Our stand with the motto "OMS – the metering standard for M-Bus interoperability" was a new attraction for the metering industry and a clear signal to utilities and the housing industry, as well as to users in energy management and home and building automation.
The informative lecture by Charles van Dyck, head of the OMS marketing group, was another OMS highlight in Vienna. "Off the shelve M-Bus Interoperability" was the title of the presentation given by the trade fair organiser, Synergy/Clarion. Van Dyck demonstrated to trade visitors how the open, license-free and BSI-compliant OMS specification enables the cross-manufacturer use of meters.

OMS Showed Presence at the metering days 2018

Former OMS spokesman Dr. Werner Domschke addressed the application of the OMS specification in Germany at metering days in October in Fulda, Germany. "The 4th generation of the OMS specification is a sensible balancing act between government requirements and the practical and economic concerns of users and the manufacturing industry". metering days 2019 will take place again in Fulda from 9 to 10 October 2019.
New Members on the Executive Board of the OMS-Group

With two new Executive Board members, the OMS-Group paves the way for interoperable metering. The General Meeting confirmed Professor Dr. Axel Sikora from the Offenburg University and Volker Eck from the Erfurt measuring instrument manufacturer Qundis as new members of the Board of the OMS-Group e. V. The new Executive Board is looking confidently into the future of interoperable meters (from left to right): Hermann Trottler (DIEHL Metering), Prof. Dr. Axel Sikora (Offenburg University), Carsten Lorenz (Honeywell Elster), Jürgen Frech (Landis + Gyr), Andreas Bolder (METRONA Union), Wolfgang Esch (WEPTECH), Gotthard Graß (figawa) and Volker Eck (Qundis). Heinz Lux (KNX) is not in this picture.

From the OMS Executive Board

Throughout 2018 it became clear that the main three challenges we face are:
  1. To organise certification in a way that our members are better satisfied.
  2. Make the OMS trademark usable for our members.
  3. To create a financial framework that keeps contribution fees low for our members while also allowing us to create additional revenue from other companies working with OMS.

All necessary steps to achieve these goals have been initiated, and the members who attended our General Meeting in November were informed in the report of the Executive Board.

This being the time of the year to reflect back we can truly say that it has been a successful year for OMS.
  • The OMS-Group is still growing. New and interesting companies joined our association.
  • There are currently 21 certified OMS products listed on our website of which 15 are of OMS Generation 4. Additional products are waiting for certification and will then extend this impressive list.
  • With the newly appointed members we have enhanced the overall expertise of the OMS Executive Board for future tasks.
The OMS Executive Board received a strong mandate at the 2018 General Meeting. It is now our responsibility to clear all obstacles in our path. We will install OMS as an EU Certification mark. We will have a 2nd source for certifying OMS products, and we will foster the OMS idea towards the identified stakeholders in economy, politics, and regulation.

We really are looking forward to achieving these goals in 2019.
