Dear Readers,
We were pleased that almost 60% of our OMS members attended this year's General Meeting on December 1, 2020, even though it was only possible, virtually. With the newest OMS member, introduced below, the OMS-Group has grown by eight companies this year. Furthermore, a new OMS certified device has been added to our product listing. It is good to see that even in these difficult times there is a great interest in the OMS-Group and the interoperable Open Metering System. Nevertheless, we very much hope to see you all again at an in-person event in 2021.
Enjoy reading this final newsletter edition of the year and send us your comments and suggestions.
We wish you a beautiful, peaceful and above all healthy holiday season!
Best regards,
Charles van Dyck
Head of the OMS Working Group Marketing

New Certified OMS Device – Product Listing Increase of 42% in 2020
The number of certified OMS devices increased significantly this year – e.g. the amount of Generation 4 devices climbed by 42%. The newest entry is the Itron’s Cyble 5, a water or gas meter, based on OMS Generation 4. A total of 32 devices are currently listed on the OMS website. OMS certification ensures compatibility with the OMS specification and paves the way to a wider market for manufacturers of interoperable smart meters. Take your chance now to get a share in that market.

Welcome to Our Newest Member PiiGAB from Sweden – OMS Community Grows to 65 Members
Being aware of your energy consumption will give you the incentive to decrease the usage and therefore the cost, and it has a direct effect on our environment. PiiGAB offer open, transparent and independent products and solutions within M-Bus, Modbus, OPC regardless of your meter brand. One of the greatest strengths at PiiGAB is their specific competence and long experience within different types of communication protocols.
Why did PiiGAB become an OMS-Group member?
PiiGAB became a member of the OMS Group because PiiGAB wants to work for an open communication standard and an interoperable meter communication that is common in Europe. This brings a lot of advantages for all, end customers, distributers as well as manufactures. For the end customer, they are then able to choose a future-proofed system with manufactures that work for the same open standard, long-term and with the best solutions. PiiGAB has worked with M-Bus for almost 25 years and has helped many customers to choose an open standard for the future.

Board Report on OMS General Meeting 2020
As you may have read in the opening address of Charles van Dyck, OMS held its General Meeting 2020 on the 1st day of December. As like so many other meetings this year the members could not meet personally but attended virtually.
A financial overview was provided, along with the budget discharge for 2019 and the approval of the 2021 budget. The OMS-Group keeps on growing, so we are in the lucky position of being able to keep the contributions unchanged for yet another year.
The Board and the representatives of the OMS’ working groups and task forces presented their activity reports for the year. As the working groups have been very active this year, the General Meeting had the task of voting on the release of the new versions of OMS Specification Vol. 1 “General Part” with its Annex A “Glossary of Terms”, OMS Specification Vol. 2 “Primary Communication” with accompanying annexes B, E, M, N, P and two completely new OMS Technical Reports, which it did with overwhelming reception. The General Meeting also gave approval of the actions of the Executive Board.
The spokesperson of the Board, Andreas Bolder, gave his short and medium term outlook on the OMS-Group. It can be summarized with two slogans: “Consolidation and expansion of our position” and “Securing past successes as the basis for progress”. The former connected with trade mark licensing, liaisons and pushing OMS as THE metering data application in an IoT world; the latter associating stability by backwards compatibility while striving for new solutions.
After the executive board announced the liaison with CEN/TC 294 "Communication systems for meters" at the end of last year, we can now proudly state that both the CEN-CENELEC Management Centre (CCMC) and the Technical Committee CEN/TC 294 have approved this application. The Agreement of Liaison will be signed by both partners in the coming days. For the OMS-Group, this opens up a new way of contributing to European standardization.
Further liaisons of the OMS-Group with other associations active in the field of battery powered radio communication are under consideration.
