Dear Readers,
2023 was a very successful year for the OMS-Group, as evidenced by the numerous new OMS members and now, 80 OMS-certified devices with Generation 4. The great visibility of the Open Metering System became clear, not least at Enlit Europe in Paris, where the OMS Product Wall featured 41 OMS products for the first time. The booth and the OMS Brunch were also very well attended. This OMS Newsletter also highlights the new OMS over LPWAN with OMS Generation 5.
We look forward to a positive 2024 and will of course be back at Enlit Europe in Milan. Enjoy your reading!
We wish you a beautiful, peaceful and above all, healthy holiday season!
Best regards,
Jörg Fischer

OMS LPWAN – New with OMS Generation 5
Low-Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) is a technology that connects battery-powered devices with low bandwidth
and low bit rates over long distances. With Generation 5 of the OMS Specification, this technology is also supported by the Open Metering System (OMS). OMS LPWAN is designed to LPWAN enable battery constrained devices including prolonged battery lifetime, state of the art radio coverage, a two-way feature set leading to the future and continued system compatibility.
Annex Q of the OMS Specification will explain the two available modes on the physical layer: The burst mode may be used license-free as an OMS-Group member, the splitting mode, requires a license.

Additionally, the OMS Brunch on Wednesday presenting an introduction of OMS Board

News from the OMS-Group’s Executive Board
For December 7, 2023, the OMS members met at their regular General Meeting of the OMS-Group. After three years of virtual meetings it was time again for a personal gathering, this time with an additional social event the evening before.
20 members followed the invitation to Berlin to the headquarter of DIN in Germany. The meeting facilities were excellent, as well as the location for the social event. Both places provided ample time and place for personal exchange. Everyone attending enjoyed the opportunities to network again within the OMS community.
During the GM various decisions regarding the future of the OMS-Group were taken.
Following earlier decisions during the last GMs, the members approved a new version of the OMS Specification – this time a new major release with Generation 5. With the newly developed OMS LPWAN the OMS-Group intends to provide an alternative for other LPWAN radio modes (please see the corresponding text in this news4all above).
Along with the new technology, also the Articles of Association had to be amended again. OMS LPWAN contains IPR being the property of the OMS-Group. With the amendment of the AoA, all members of the OMS-Group have the right to use a specific sub-mode of OMS LPWAN without additional royalties. The necessary changes to the AoA found an overwhelming reception among the members.
Also, the members were informed that the term of the current Board ends the end of next year. This time will be used to set up the OMS-Group towards the future and hopefully leave no loose ends for the next EB.
Although the state of the earth is nothing to be proud of as a human race, I would like to encourage everyone to persevere in taking every small step towards a sustainable economy. Doing nothing is not an option! After all, everything counts in large amounts.
So, take this time of the year to refill your resources and find new strength, we will all need it.
