OMS-Group at Light + Building: Open standards for smart meters

Cologne, March 14, 2018 – Smart metering is a key factor in the integration of energy management and building automation. Visitors to Light + Building (March 18-23) in Frankfurt, Germany, will learn at the OMS-Group stand how meters for various energy sectors and submetering can be networked easily and securely. Technically designed on the basis of the common M-Bus, the OMS specification enables open metering communication for the first time.

The only interoperable standard for smart metering will be presented in Hall 9.1 in the OPEN BUILDING SYSTEMS marketplace by three OMS members. Jörg Fischer from Relay GmbH, Hermann Lertes from the same-named engineering provider, and Remo Reichel from Solvimus GmbH will provide detailed information about the Open Metering System (OMS).

The founding member of OMS, the KNX Association is represented in several halls of the Light + Building fair. OMS is based on the EN 13757-x standard and is compatible with the widely-used KNX standard (ISO / IEC 14543-3 = EN 50090). Thus, building automation systems can be directly connected, e.g. for energy management.

The German Federal Cartel Office points out in its report "Sector inquiry submetering" of May 2017 that the use of proprietary meter systems is to be critically evaluated from a competitive point of view. With its interoperable smart metering communication standard, the OMS-Group offers a proven way out in the direction of open meter systems. Their use reduces energy consumption and facilitates the integration of renewable energies.

In addition to OMS, the M-Bus will also be a focal point of the exhibition. M-Bus and wireless M-Bus are the technical cornerstone of interoperability in metering and submetering. Developed over 20 years ago, M-Bus is currently recognized as a robust fieldbus system for wired and wireless meter communication. Its application provides investment security and is considered future-proof.

The OMS-Group, an association that represents the interests of 55 member companies and associations, has set the goal of further developing and distributing OMS as an open communication standard, and will do so at this year's Light + Building in Frankfurt. Here again, the focus will be on the benefits of proven OMS technology: future-proofing through European standardization, freedom in choosing suppliers through full interoperability and long-term investment and planning security.
